Individual work due to cancelled lesson on Wed, 26 Jan 2011:
Skyline C, pp 165-167 'Can you hear me at the back?'

  1. Task 1a/b: (Re-)Read the speech and highlight aspects of the town that Philip Turner criticises. Compare your findings with your results from the listening exercise (i.e., complete your list in writing).
  2. Task 2: Based on the 'Lego Land' example, revise the meaning of denotation and connotation. Find a suitable example of your own to illustrate denotation and connotation of a word or phrase.
  3. Task 3: Rhetorical devices in P.T.'s talk
  4. A step further 1: Name the implications of P.T.'s statement
  5. A step further 2: Write an essay on one of the two suggested topics, using vocabulary from the vocab sheet. (If you have 'Skyline C' at home, please consult the skills file on p 187.)

Bring the answers to our next class (first class after the winter break).

Homework for the lesson after the one-week holidays:

  1. Freshen up your vocabulary on statistics. Skills file: Introducing statistics and charts
  2. Find an (online-)article with some statistic information on 'urban development' or 'urban planning' in the US, the UK, Australia, or any other English-speaking country.
